Leveraging Self-Awareness and Empathy for Leadership Development

Abstract: Presentation on two traits that are necessary in making the transition from program analyst or project manager to Chief or Assistant Director.

Summary: Overview on Self-Awareness will focus on how to develop executive presence while staying away from triggers that lead to performance deficiencies. Will focus on how self-awareness allows for a 5,000 foot view of a situation rather than being in the weeds. Address conscious bias as a key component in being a self-aware leader that promotes a psychologically safe workspace.

Overview on Empathy will focus on how to reframe to maintain control over difficult conversations while conveying empathy. As a leader, we are expected to hold people accountable yet still be the biggest cheerleader for our employees. By showing empathy we can do both and maintain support from direct reports.
